Hey!

Former Marine (12 years) who just picked up a guitar and started learning to play. No formal training or anything like that. Just browse the internet and memorize chords, tuning etc. Own an old, beat-up Squier that sounds a heck of a lot better when I'm not the one playing it. Ha ha ha!

What's up doc? (couldn't resist!)
I would say most of us started just as you have, surfing the net for info. Hope you find what you need to improve right here. We have some brilliant members (I'm not one of them). So ask when you have questions.

Welcome aboard, Doc. I'm a former Marine myself. '88 to '95. My MOS was 2674. I'm learning the same way you are and find this site to be a great one for learning scales, licks, theory and so on.

Welcome aboard guys! Glad to see more military guys here...Hehe, I'm no Marine, but I am an active duty soldier enjoying the great city of Baghdad. I'll be here 'til December '10. I'm more than happy to answer anything you got concerning guitar stuff, or just music in general. Though I may not be the most knowledgable on this site (I think I'm trumped by at least Jazz, Afro and Carl), I'm pretty confident I can help yall out.

Rock On!

Hey everyone my name is Max and im from London Ontario Canada but I was born in New York. I love Heavy Metal but I love music in general. I've played a few shows with my former band. I see many of you are very knowledgeable in music theory, so im looking forward to maybe learning a thing or two and hearing your guys' music.

Hello.

I listened to J.J Cale play after midnight and Cocaine and was instantly hooked. I knew I had to learn The Blues...

I'm hoping to brush up on my theory...

Welcome aboard guys. Like Phip said, there's a lot of theory running around here.
We'd like to help about anything, though, not just theory so feel free to ask (and answer).

Hi, I'm Courtland.
I listen to rock. I'm not sure if it'd really be called 'hard rock' or not, though. (Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Van Halen, etc.) I like almost everything music-wise, but that's the main stuff I listen to. I also really like The Beatles and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Hello Courtland! :D

I can definitely relate to your music as far as listening goes ;) I love VH and other "hair" bands of the like from the 80s era(I would call them Hard Rock).
SRV happens to also be one of my favorite players :D
Welcome to the forum, hope you learn a bunch ;)

Oh, I forgot something! lol
I just started learning how to play Monday, so if it seems like I have a low skill-level, it's probably because I have a low skill-level.

and yea, SRV is definitely one of the greats.
Thanks! Seeing as I have a whole lot to learn, I probably will lol!

Hey to all! I'm creepin' up on 42 and have been playing guitar for around thirty years. I was fortunate to have a very musical family, my mom and dad played guitar and piano and I have two older brothers who play guitar and various other stringed instruments. They all taught me stuff here and there.

My dad was a major influence to me and taught me the most in my early years. He played in orchestras in the 40's and 50's and really knew his stuff, especially those jazzy progressions and 9th, dim, aug etc. chords, which I learned at a young age. Well, not so much the progressions as the chords, I was too much into rock music to really utilize them.

Other than family, I've learned from mail order lessons, magazines, friends, and upon visiting an aunt and uncle in NY about 20 years ago, some theory lessons at the American Institute of Guitar.
I know a lot of scales but not necessarily what some are and when to use them. When I improvise a lead it's usually a pentatonic scale, I feel more comfortable with them I guess, and you can really do a lot with them.

I thought I knew my sh** till I found this site. Here is a place that has opened up a lot of avenues for me and I'd like to thank whoever is responsible! :-D Sorry for the long post y'all

Hello Bilbo,
It's good to have another older member in the forum! Would love to sit down with your dad and listen to stories from the big band era. I suspect that with 30 years of experience you are being modest about your skill level. It's a "give and take" atmosphere around here so stick around and learn/share as much as you can stomach! hahaha
Welcome,
Phip

Hey thanks for the welcome, guys! Unfortunately my dad passed away in 1988. I used to thank him for teaching me and he would say he had more he could show me whenever I wanted him to. And me being a cocky teen said maybe later or something to the effect of I'm ok with the knowledge I have now. Do you know how many times I have kicked myself for being so stupid? How I wish I could go back in time and learn more from him. I gotta stop or I'm gonna get emotional. I have heard some great and funny stories of when he used to play places!

And maybe I am a bit modest but I've learned it really doesn't pay to be an egomaniac 'cause there's always someone who can cut your head clean off! I'm good, but nowhere near the best. I know I can learn more here from the tools and y'all, and everyone, and maybe post a few things myself. With all the lessons available here, hopefully I can think of something that hasn't been done! ;-)

Hey peoples. Im Derek. Been playing since I found out the guitar rocks. I started on drums then bass, but found the guitar to be most exciting.

I record a lot of music. Im very easy going so if you want to ask a question, by all means, ask it.

I hope to get better and better as I get older. I view myself in my later years in a old fokes home ripping out killer guitar riffs.

And yes, I will die with a guitar in my hands. That or a hot chick.

hey guys whats up, my names Jonathan Taylor, I've actually been a user of this site for at least a good year now, I love the scale/arpeggio finders as well as the chord progression generator. some really awesome stuff here. I'm a big fan of Necrophagist and the Faceless as well as allan holdsworth and guthrie govan. among many other metal bands. I really enjoy classical music and jazz, it would be cool if you guys could introduce me to some good jazz sometime. my favorite composers are bach and haydn and mozart. I love intricate music and trying new things on guitar.

I'm in a death metal band called Yersinia Pestis feel free to check us out. www.myspace.com/yersiniapestismetal

my youtube channel is guitar4evr30. I'm always down to discuss theory as I can see some of the members of this site really know what their talking about. there you have it guys.
