I gave this quite a bit of thought a while ago. I just stuck to living people though, and kept it within the same kind of genre. For example, if Beethoven was still around, then it's unlikely he would want to form a band with metal players such as Gilbert, etc. it's kinda like Slayer doing a collaboration with... erm... Britney Spears. It's never going to happen! I also limited myself to one musician from each band.

I can't remember what all my results were. My music tastes have changed quite a bit since then though so I'll give it another go sometime.

Vocals/Rhythm Guitar: Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave, solo)

Lead Guitar: John Petrucci (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment)

Keyboard/Rhythm Guitar/Backing Vocals: Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree/Blackfield)

Bass: Justin Chancellor (Tool)

Drums: Martin Lopez (Opeth)

________________________________________________________

I know Chris Cornell isn't the singer that he used to be, I selected him mostly based on his vocals from the album "Badmotorfinger" and "Louder Than Love". Steven Wilson would be able to provide keyboard soundscapes, as well as rhythm guitar and backing vocals. I chose Justin Chancellor for his versatility and originality, more than his technical ability on bass. I also really like his tone.

Honestly, I could just post Led Zeppelin as a whole, but in the spirit of the thread:

Singer: Thom Yorke
Guitar 1: John Frusciante
Guitar 2: Pete Townshend
Bass: Victor Wooten (I'm not sure how to spell that)
Drums: Neil Peart

Those aren't necessarily my favorite musicians at the given position, but I tried to think of people who would sound good together... and weren't in Zeppelin.

Yeah, I suppose, my bad. I just thought it would sound a bit weird with two lead guitarists and no rhythm guitar.

Lol, yeah. And it could be possible to not enjoy it since a lot of those musicians aren't going to go together that well... unless, since it's an orchestra they are conducted by someone and in which case it'd sound really similar to a conducter conducting any rock musicians who are capable (like a bunch of sessions musicians).

It depends. Depends on the genre and era. I think for my hard rock theme, I'd have to say. Not really my dream band, but closest to the style of music I've been feeling lately. I'm not really sure about lead guitar, that would be a tough call IMO. I'd say Joe Satriani or Yngwie Malmsteem lol. But actually, I think the lead guitarist of Iced Earth would sound good with this combination too.

Vocals: Maynard Keenan (Tool)
Lead Guitar: No clue
Rhythm Guitar: Josh Homme (Kyuss, QOTSA)
Bass: Les Claypool (Primus)
Drummer: Edsel Dope
