do they have to be famous????because there are a lot of great youtube guitarist who have ORIGINAL material who are better than some(most) famous people today. even some people on this forum.

Mick Murphy from my ruin, his styles like a cross between metal and good ol' rock n roll.
Arjen Anthony Lucassen the genius behind Ayreon. This is prog metal and epic on all proportions. The albums are often (from what I have/have seen) about 2 hours long and feature traditional rock instruments synthesisers, viols, flutes, flutes etc and he plays them all himself. And he's underrated in all aspects imo

@ all: There are no "rules" to who you can and cannot put on this thread. Just throw names out there, the more the merrier, as it will provide possibly some new artists to us on this forum.
@ gs: Forgive me if this is ignorant, but who is Sean Conklin? I had a few minutes to youtube and the dude can flat out play obviously. Is he an instructor? Does he play in a group? I can't find much info on him other than youtube vids.

Randy Rhoads: I'll explain my reasoning
I would say RR would be underrated as a guitarist merely because he only ever had his playing released on 3 albums in America, 2 with Quiet Riot in Japan. Most people who don't play guitar(and some that do) don't know who he is. With that being said, I feel that a lot of people tend to overlook just how much Randy contributed to those first two Ozzy records. I firmly believe that without Randy, Ozzy may not have seen the kind of success that he did.
A lot of people tend to overlook how much he managed to do in such a small amount of time, and just how many players in the last 30 years have cited him as an influence.
And a tidbit on Kirk Hammett
I also think that while Kirk Hammett is a bit overrated in the "younger" player circles, he is extremely underrated in the "older" player groups(usually). He's got a great sense of when and where to use hooks in a solo, which a lot of people tend to forget, makes a solo much more musical than straight up shred.
Would you rather blast a King/Hanneman solo(both are horribly overrated IMO) or a Kirk solo?
Not the best player in history, but you have to say that he isn't bad. Not everyone can hold down a band's lead guitar spot for almost 30 years. Just ask Dave XD

I think Dave Mustaine is underrated in the playing/singing area. I don't play much lead and was always the rhythm/singer in past bands. Megadeth has some rhythm patterns that are hard to play even if you are not singing. For that reason Dave would get my respect even without playing leads.
I agree about Mustaine. I also think the same thing about James Hetfield. It takes a lot of skill to play thrash and sing. Dave even throughs in some killer solos here and there.

@Matt8675 Good call on Greg Howe, you stole one of mine!
1. Joao Gilberto: Performed and recorded the guitar part for the timeless Bossa Nova classic, "Girl From Impanema". He went on to record more songs with Astrud (singer) and recorded a few of his own instrumental jazz pieces... he is definately great due to his precision and understanding of the genre. Why he is not as known as other guitarist is wierd, however I guess it is due to the fact that Bossa Nova/Jazz is not as prevelant, as it was during his time.
2. Mike Einziger of Incubus: He has innovative melodies and writes most of the music for Incubus (beside the Lyrics), and is currently an active music composer working on his first orchestra! I think he attends Harvard as well. He doesn't get much recognition because Boyd (singer) usually gets the attention, as many frontmen do. He uses effects "effectively" (yeah pun intended; im classy), reminding me of Zappa/Hendrix hybrid.
3. Steve Kimock: You probably never heard of him, because he likes it that way. If you were to see him down the street you would see him as an average middle aged man (as if there is a stereotype for guitarists). However just watch him pick up a guitar and hear him play. Never before had I heard a guitarist play purely instrumental and capture everyones attention with exception to Vai, and Satriani. He really is the modern day Vai and Satriani. But he plays in a "jam" style, with twists of progressive and jazz lines. He plays the guitar, sitar, lap steel and bass... he also plays the guitar in a unique manner that influenced me to "follow suit": while playing, he will switch between playing with his fingers and pick as to help with the song's contrast and feeling. Plus he is a Colorado native! (im a Denver-ite) I have had the honor to see him live at a local venue in the denver metro area called "Herman's Hide-away".
