Banjo advice please?

Hey guys. I already gave up banjo a while ago after this cruddy one my parents got me way back for my 14th b'day was found to have a dogey peg and a rotten neck deep inside it's wood.

What's really annoyed me is my parents said they paid a lot for that banjo and got it from a really good place (they never gimme specific details about gifts they get me - but I trust them on that). And I wanna play again - but this banjo guy I took mine to this year said that because banjos are so hard to come across here you'll often get ripped off for a banjo that was made a piece of trash even from new basically.

So, what I wanna know is what brands and types are actually good? And how much do you normally get charged for them where you're from? I wanna go hunt for one without getting ripped off again.

i played a dean and a epihone 4stringers,there.both around $300.give or take,and pretty good banjos if ya just want one to.mess around with,but there are.mor.expensive brands too.another couple of enigmas are how many strings?open or closed back?

Aha it's okay, I read it just fine I rarely seem to see most people's typos for some reason :S Sorry I shoulda mentioned that - I'm looking for another 5 string with an open back. But I'll still note dean and epiphone when I go fiddle with some banjos in a music shop, thanks :-)
