The biggest embarrasment to music is when people use it for money. Primarily I mean record companies not caring about quality, and only caring about quantity.

Your gonna get some hits for that one gshredd!

I would say the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. There's a whole lotta bands that shouldn't be there and a whole lot that should.

why Metallica? I mean every ones tastes change over the years, why can't a bands taste change? I would think that I will explore music that I don't normally listen to or play after 15 years.

I think music critics are the biggest embarrassments. A lot of them are far too biased to be giving their opinion as "fact".

I gotta go with mac. The R&R Hall of Fame is a joke.
@gs I can understand your feelings from your point of view but for an old fart like me..when Metallica came out it was like someone poured my emotions on vinyl. If you think Metallica is bad try going for years of the Foreigner, Journey etc...era. So I don't care what they are doing now I won't trash talk because the beginning outweighs the end.

Lipsynchers, people who can't write their own songs, and people who can't sing and monotone or autotune everything.

Rappers that try showing off... On a guitar that isn't plugged in...

OK, this is a debate that I hear A LOT from many people, who all believe they have a valid opinion to offer. So, I'd like to ask you all a couple of questions in order to debunk your theories of 'embarassment to music'.

Question 1: What do you mean by 'good' music or 'bad' music, and what parameters/methods are you using to reach your conclusions?

Answers here or on a postcard please - when I've got some relevant responses I'll give you the next question!

@mac yeah,i kinda figured i would, but hey just my opinion.and that big four show sounds epic wish i could go.

@afroraven the parmeters u use to tell good music from.from.bad music are...
#1 originality
#2 there sincerity.ie,not sellouts.to the trending genre.
#3 and music that makes me feel different than i normally feel, emotion.

@everyone else i like mettalica.I thrashed many a time to the old stuff.but they sold out to the trending grunge era.Isnt it a bit strange that during the 90's they cut there hair and started writing slow songs?I can appreciate there old albums, but with load and reload it was like did i pick up a bush record by mistake? noo. *gasp*

@gshredder How can you tell if an artist is sincere or not, rebecca black said she was offered two songs to do and she chose friday because she didn't have any experience of the subject matter of the first song. So surely by choosing a song about something she knew about emotionally to sing then she is choosing the song she can sing with the most sincerity... However it's still a terrible song.

Personally the only thing I find embarrassing now about music is how songwriters don't get enough credit, Every heard of Richard Stannard and Matt Rowe? I doubt it however they wrote 2 become 1 for the spice girls and probably more. It's a song that took a lot of talent to write but the ones who wrote it get little or no recognition.

@ Afro. I don't think there's an answer to this 'embarrassment' question. 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'.

@ gshredder:

Metallica in the early 90s sounded nothing like the grunge scene whatsoever. I am not a huge fan of them now, althogh I used to be and I always thought their music in the 80s was better than in the 90s, but to say it was just selling out I think is incorrect. There are quite a few very good songs on Load. For example, I really enjoy "Bleeding Me", "The Outlaw Torn", and "Mama Said" are all great songs.

@ Afro:

What I define as good music is simply music that people enjoy and inspires people. I don't have to like it for it to be good. For example, I think Nirvana is pretty marginal, but many people love their music and feel that music and it is fairly simple. Therefore it is good music. Not something I listen to all that often as I said, but that isn;t what good music is. There are tons of great pieces of music that I don't like.

Bad music is pretty tough to define and difficult to do as well. Even garbage that is mass produced may be something that really calls to someone. You never know. I have a difficult time judging the music of others as being bad.

@danielM i judge sincerity by the amount of by the amount of creativity in the music.

@btimm you are correct when you say they didnt sound like 90's era grunge, but they certainly sounded a bit different during the 90's did they not? listen to Load or reload then listen to any other mettalica record, they followed the metal trend of the 80's right up until the 90's then they followed the slow, depressing semi- ballad trend of the 90's.now in this era they realeased a metal album because metal is again.popular.

Green Day are amazing, then they were desperate to stay alive so pretty much turned into pop/punk.

Metallica are pure legends who have most definitely made a difference in music and have left their mark in history.

Anyway guys, this is just a silly debate, yet again about who's good and who's not. We know who's embarrassing because they really aren't talent and they're over rated because the companies controlling these pawns are making big bucks off of these foolish talentless noobs.

The title of the thread is IN YOUR OPINION that's why I agreed with mac and said the hall of fame. They have made some of the most ridicules decisions in rock and roll history. When you give opinions concerning bands or artist no one will ever agree. But think about it, even the bands we hate are getting paid. Some of them very well.

@Afro

Your question is there good music or bad music is bit hard to answer, because we must answer first, is there good or bad. Thats itself is not an easy task to answer even if it is without subject.

But Im more than moron to try anyway...

We set an possibility that good and bad exist where we use commonly known details of each (commonly believed that they exist) subjects.

when good and bad exist like they do in this case where it is for describing quality, it must related to another third person subject. The person.

In that case we have a new task, determine is the person cabable of determining do the music fill the properties of commonly known details of good and bad... I know this is the question that could have books of conversations to get any result, but we set here more close possibility that it is.. "no, that person cant"

that leaves us in a situation where we dont have the cababilities to continue.
what then? should we abandon the orginal question, because we cant get the acceptable result and get an finished answer.

I know, that is question to answer question... so... I must admit, I cant answer to that question.

anyway
I think, embarrasment in music, could relate to performing the music, where performer fail to do it like performer planned or wished for.

@gshredder just because someone's more creative doesn't make other musicians any less sincere about their music.

Also define creative, a Beyonce song uses a B♭5-F5-Cm7-E♭6/9 chord progression which I think is more creative than a lot of rock progressions and a Spice Girls song in one point uses: E♭m add9D♭/FG♭A♭m7sus4 which is again even more creative.

However a Beatles song uses C D G Em Bm B7 Dm, the chord progression is a simpler easier one, it's the sort of thing I would strum absent-mindedly without thinking too much.

The thing is what song would you prefer, Beatles or one of the two I mentioned before?

Sorry if it sounds like I'm having a go or anything I'm just playing devils advocate.

Maybe beyonce is just trying to be a hipster with her chords, because major and minor chords are to "main stream"
ANY WAYS.
I think there's a lot to be said for composition in creativity. Using common elements in a different way scores as many points in my book as does creating something brand new... or well new to me.

@gshredder| glad I'm not the only who who doesn't think Metallica is all that great... My friend worship them as Gods... and then everything they write sounds like a b-side or rejected song from a Metallica album. Writing songs that are pointlessly heavy isn't normal, but on Metallica it is. (IMHO if you disagree that's cool just M-O)

c^@nullnaught and the undying yuuup agreed.

@daniel complication and creativity are 2 different things any idiot can get a chord book and play those chords.whats so creative about it? my idea of creativity is someone who writes there own songs, has a interesting backbeat and rhythm and sounds like something i havnt heard before or regularly hear.

That's also my idea of creativity however you don't regularly hear an Eb6/9 or an Abm7sus4 put to use so by one of your definitions it is creative. So that makes Beyonce's and the spice girls music sincere as well.

I am just building off afroravens point on what is bad music, the spice girls have already ticked one of the points you said something needs to be good music, so is it not unreasonable to assume a lot of mainstream pop is indeed good music? Albeit good music wrote by an undervalued song writer, but still good music.

I'm just trying to inspire thought, as far as I'm concerned all music can be good in some way it's just not to my tastes

He isn't trying to one-up you as you put it. He is trying to get you to think more and outside the box. He said he is building off of afroraven's post. You really need to stop taking every little comment as a personal attack as you often do.

Sincere music?

I can tell to myself "hey,i REALLY want to do a dance song that appeals to the masses in clubs, songs that when people hear it they want to go crazy, feel extasis, drink as hell, and a song that i can make money with" so i writte a 4 chord simple melody song with "standaar" female uplifting vocals and a trance lead and its a massive Hit,if its a hit, that makes me a No-Sincere musician? Is it bad to sell a product?

Music/Art has ALWAYS been a product,a product you can profit with if you are smart enuff,Metallica is a product,Ozzy is a product,Clapton is a product,Bitney,Selena,Miley, all of them understand that music is a bussines and they want to be part of it,if you want to be a "sellout, isnt that sincere enuff? they want to be a product,Dream Theater is a product no other prog metal band can compare to,they are big and famous, that is a no sincere artist? they give people what people want, and that is entertainment.

Again,no bashing in here, but this is my way of seeing things, people talk about Art and the love to art and "i want to do whatever music i want and **** the system if they dont like i will play my stuff" and thats ok,but people talking like that, generally, are the ones who cant understand,or simply cant "make it" into the big music scene. People have different ways to see music, but as a manner of Respect to they guys that are "up there" ,us,who are still down here, should really consider merits, goals, achievements, failures, and everything when we talk about those big names in the industry. Being said that,to me,the one who cant understand this,is a big embarrasment to music.
