As promised (threatened lol?)
…My extremely opinionated thoughts on these Vids.

I cant stand ‘competition’ in the music world , but am kinda taking that approach to what I’ve heard and seen as this would be a 7 page essay were I NOT to use that kinda thinking. (Yeah, I know)

But I do promise to be honest and fair and all that hoopla

I don’t like ‘Covers’ so they got a fast point off as playing something that came outta someone else’s head (and off their fingers) forces individuality to the side unless the cover is a re-interpretation of the original.

I LOVE nice chord work and no one seems interested in learning many interesting chords these days so tunes w/ them get that ‘point’ that covers lose.

That said.

My favorite playing and the RAWK! Award, goes, ‘Hands down’, to the exploratory fingers of JustJeff. Bravo Suh! Bravo!
You show great promise, imo; the passion is there the hands are relaxed you seek to ‘serve the song’ rather than ego, you explore the neck ….i could go on and on but I wont because another part of your playing that I enjoy is the ‘organic’ feel/approach you take and more words, I fear may mess that up.
Kudos!

Null also grabbed my attention.
The first Vid I saw was kinda so-so (remember I am an opinionated, jaded old fart)
BUT
The next up was a VERY nice “Blues” Improvisation, not much ‘bling’ but a LOT of sing. What struck me was (like JJ) your relaxed approach and feel for the tune, and the heart-culled directions you took it in. I’m rough on any ‘Blues’ I hear as one of my teachers in the mid 1970’s (not Terry, Hector Qirko .. no ’u’, look him up) is also one of my favorite Bluesmen (Hector Qirko Blues Band fer some 30 yrs) who started out at 15 or so backing Lonny Brooks (another fav) in Chi-town … you remind me of my days under his wing (huge compliment) Do you play and Ac-Delta style Blues? Open tunings/slide-work? I think, given the right guys to push you (aka band) your playing would grow quickly and in interesting directions.
I did, however keep looking for more Triadic play, more Chordal exploration and such. Great job!

BBT
I know you are much younger than both NULL , Mr McPhippy and myself and I recall in the past being unimpressed with most BUT again came the Blues!
… Although you seemed to struggle a bit the intent behind the fingers was shining through. The melodic ideas were/are quite nice! … as I told NULL I would like to hear more triadic/chordal ‘motion’ but the note choices felt nice! So Kudos there! I think I hear you stepping away from the sterile sound of Berkley grads like Pettruci-etc and into your own light and I think that’s fantastic, as music isn’t , lol, a sport but an art :) “less is more” … I recently taught a young man (26 or so) this wretched solo from some Dream Theater cd (ugh) and was very surprised and happy when after ‘getting it down’ he told me (paraphrasing) ‘I liked it better when I couldn’t hit ALL the notes’ lol ‘it seemed like he (JP) was putting too much paint on a nice looking canvas’ …I was proud of him, to say the least and of YOU in the same way, it seems you are moving away from speed for speeds sake and into your own! Again, nice job. And …..I’ll ask what I asked bro-Null “Do you play and Ac-Delta style Blues? Open tunings/slide-work? “

EMB
GREAT VOCALS!
But you frustrate me with this “classic rock radio” stuff. I don’t mean to sound harsh but it’s obvious you have a nice large space to play in + time, gear etc, why waste that on playing Pink Floyd-etc instead of developing what I believe could be some very powerful and originals (based on the jams I heard).
That said … you ARE singing AND playing, something we need more of on this forum and in this world.
Still, very nice vocals from such a young guy!

Casey Ya know I loves ya, ya young freak, and don’t let those emails stop BUT if I EVER hear Crazy Train again I’ll go Postal! Eeek!
I have had to teach that riff to so many kids I think I’ll dig Randy up and beat him, LOL but that aint really your ‘fault’ as I am the guy who long ago decided to teach (read as: Carl is beyond burned out on that and its annoying (to teachers who’ve heard ‘em 1,000,000,000 times) siblings such as Stairway, Freebird, C-Numb(solo), Eruption, Sweet Home Alabama, and a few others … many of which I once loved ;~)

OZZ
Very nice Bach! (yes its C#)
And I really really enjoyed the exploration of and on the ?-Martin, some tasty riffs are brewing in ya!

matthewmoran
Its good to finally see someone at a club-gig! NO I don’t wanna do that grind again myself, but you seem to be off to a nice start! I’d like to hear more.

I THINK …. The Phipster should post a Vid!!! He’s a Mod now! Aint that part of the deal? C’mon Phippy! RAWK-US!
(seeya fer Bean)

All and all guys … sounding good, I hear improvement everywhere across the forum! Kudos!

And if I sounded ‘harsh’ or somesuch remember it was all constructive criticism(s), and heck, if I said everyone was a RAWK god I’d be out of a Job lol…..

Keep it up y’all !!!

RAWK!

Here is the rhythm for an old, never recorded song I came up with a while ago. I think I posted it once before, but I forget so here it is. By the way, I don't use myspace, and I can't even remeber my logon, so don't try to add me.

Enjoy!

Hey Carl... Yeah.. we do gig. I also do the occasional house concert tour. From LA to Chicago - several stops along the way. Usually just me but my guitar player is going to go next time out. That should be fun.. I don't have all the fancy chops that a lot of you do - I spend more time on the writing/structure side of things..

Not thrilled with the audio quality on this one but we really like the song.. This was a show earlier this month. Lyrics below...

Escape
Copyright © 2010 - Matthew Moran

VERSE:
I've got this old duffle bag full of Colombian stash
Made a trip to the bank, turned my bonds into cash
Cuz I got me this Captain and he got him a boat
Gonna make my escape and keep my dreams afloat, keep my dreams afloat

Cuz this man's gotta be what this man's always been
I'm a dreamer of dreams, I'm a lover, a friend
And I make no excuses, so excuse me my faults
It's safer asking forgiveness than permission I'm told, then permission I'm told

CHORUS:
Am I losing ground or winning it back
Have I lost my way or am I on the right track
I've taken some falls. Imagine that
Been handed some bruises now I'm giving them back (givin' 'em back)

VERSE:
Well the bartender told me her name was Belize
The way she swayed to the music it was easy to see
That she was promise and danger. She's salvation and sin.
She's a whirlpools pull and I was falling right in, I was falling right in

I'd love to tell you about passion. I'd love to tell you about love
But past our 2nd dance you know I don't recall much
When those 3 local boys darkened the door to this bar
You know I should have stopped dancing, it would have been the wise call, would have been the wise call

VERSE:
I woke up on the beach to the sounds of the sea
It seems Belize and the boys they got the better of me
My head it aches from the rum, my body aches from the fight
And from the what I can't recall it was one hell of a night, it was one hell of a night

Now my pockets are empty, my stash blown to the wind
and like a sail through the storm my dreams are tattered and thin
but I know me a captain and he's in need of a crew
So when you make your escape I might be shuttling you, I might be shuttling you.

Sounds like fun Lydian. It would be nice to see your fretting hand tho'. Whats that thing in the soundhole of the acoustic, the big thing towards the lower bout, not the pickup.

Beautiful Groove is great.

I played Bach? lol. Thanks bro. I honestly don't know what the Martin is. It's just one of the cheap models, I got it for $450. It's no D-18 or anything by any means.

It was my first time using the camera. I agree haha

It's a home made feedback dampener. I'm borrowing the guitar so idk what it was made out of.

Thank you, I just posted a new one too.

Case: maybe if you play with the original in headphones it would be easier to hear, as it is I can't really hear you until 3:50. :(

What's the new gear? What I could hear sounded good.

Here's the vid I had playing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwn5fX3q7MY

I'm the only guitar aside from the backing rhythm... under the solos and interlude(and the hits with the bass and drums in the beginning).

New gear is of course the most obvious, Dean Mustaine V, but the amp is the B-52 AT-212. Amazing tone for only 300 bucks. All tube too, which is very nice on the ears.

I'm very new to this website and I've been playing guitar for two years, I know little music theory, and I am very nervous to post a video of myself playing my guitar in this forum, because all of you are so good and I don't really see myself as that good of a player.

SmoOz,
Go ahead and post. The group here will give you some feedback, suggestions, maybe some criticism if you can handle it OR you can wait until you lay down a track that you're proud of. Either way is good. And welcome!
