I am considering buying a custom Carvin SH550. Have any of you had any experience with this guitar. If so, what is your experience with the tone of the guitar. I personally like the tone of a Gibson Clasic 57 and I know Carvin builds their own. They have been traditionally know to be played in Rock Genre. I play jazz fussion, Blues, and Rock. I love the look of their guitars, however, a warm tone is important to me.

My dad owns a Carvin DC127 I think. Not really one of my favorites. But that is just preference, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. The instrument, as well as the couple other Carvin's I have played, sounds amazing. Great sustain with think bottoms and crispy highs. Definitely straight for Jazz or like rock. The necks reminded me of Gibson LP's a little, one thing I didn't/don't like about them. But when it comes to tone and quality, Carvin is most certainly at the top of the list for your genres. I know I mentioned the neck feeling like a Gibson, the instruments still played very smooth and fast.

On the other hand, you can by two quality guitars for the price of one Carvin guitar. Like I said above, the distance between the strings was not to my liking. I don't like to buy a guitar only to have to work on it to get it how I like it.

Rock on!

Love Carvins. I've played a lot of them in the Carvin store in Santa Ana Ca. They are all made in America with the best materials and hardware. The stock models can all be customized in almost every area online (this is the one guitar I would/will buy online). The sh550 comes fully loaded stock. I would play one first though. The problem with that is that Carvins are only sold in their stores in California. Where do you live? I will go to the one in Santa Ana and try one for you and give you honest assessment of the guitar if you want. Seriously, I go there all the time! Let me know.

@macandknga

I have played them. I live in So Cal. I told the store manager I did not like the tone as well as my guitar. I have Clasic 57's that came from the Gibson Custom Shop. I think I plan to negotiate to have them put in custom pick ups. Before I do that I was trying to do a santity check. Maybe I was being t0o picky.

Ok. Just be sure the tone you're after is because of the pickups or the amp you tried it out on.
