Yeah, I agree. Drums or bass. Get everything figured out how you want it to be, lay the drums down, and build off of that. Kind of like a pyramid, just keep building up, vocals being on top.

If its just YOU (no band)

Drums
(i record a dry kit to a clicked piano or guitar playing the "key melody line/chord outline")
Then Bass...
Then its off to the races...
(and into Reason/Acid/C-Base/Sonar/etc fer severe brain trauma, lol)

it depends. i play some crazy funk stuff where i NEED to follow lyrics and bass to play my part correctly, and sometimes its much easier to do it w.o... so id say it depends. generally drums bass guitar vox

Id depends on what I hear in my head first. Sometimes it's the bass line and sometimes it's the guitar. Then I figure what the drums should sound like and I lay down the drums first for timming. Then the bass. Then I can lay down rhythm guitar and sometimes a second guitar and lastly any solos.
