I think they make guitar cables that are 1/2 cable, 1/2 usb too.

I don't know if it's a fluke or what Elliot, but I'm plugging directly into my sound card at the moment and it seems to be working just fine.
Equipment = guitar - Creative XFI Fatality sound card - Cakewalk Guitar Tracks. My OS (if it makes any difference) is XP Pro.

for a really nice and CLEAN interface thats not overkill, i'd strongly suggest Apogee's 'Duet', a nice, simple '2-in' (using break-out box)Fire-wire interface (good control surface for getting to g-band as well.) several friends of mine who do "mersh' (backgrounds to shows, commercials, movies etc) at HGTV, swear by this (they all are Mac-guys) unit and use it at home on laptops+ ...

http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/duet.php

yes, it costs more than the other options BUT OMNSHO you can either pay once, very wisely, and grow from it, or pay cheaply, over and over and over again...really.

I use the PreSonus Firestudio system (and before it, the Alesis IO/26) becase i NEED all the 'ins' they afford me but if i needed to augment my gear w/ a simple 2-in interface , the Duet, would be my pick, hands down.(and i am broke lol)

Oh and check out Apogees "new guy" ... cant wait till get to (via friends above^lol) mess with 'ONE' , their new Mic-thang-interface (Championed here by Tommy Emmanuel) I know this aint what you or i are looking for but dang! it sounds really good.

http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/hear-one.php

Both use Garageband as their 'go-to demos' as Apogee and Mac are 'business pals'

Hope this helped ... when anyones starting, any studio, almost anyhere that i know, in any way (lol) , my old , knob-twisting arse gets all happy!

:)

RAWK!

Hmm I can't say I'm a fan of DI'ing a guitar. It just doesn't seem right! I would personally go for an audio interface and record it in with an SM57, but hey that's just my view.

Something like that? the sockets can double as XLR or jack input so whatever tickles your fancy. Also it's USB!
