The easiest (well quickest) way to remove the finish is via heat gun. But by sanding, start with something similar to 400 then move to 200 when the loading isn't so bad on the 400.

This is assuming the finish is nitro, if its poly, well things get fun and you will be sanding for years

the smoother you want her the finer the grit! I would think you'd want to start with something rough then go with the finer sand, not 400 to 200.

@KicknGuitar, you're right, typo on my part, should be starting at 200 and when the loading on the grit isn't so bad move up to 400.

@michaelcollins: nitro finishes have a sweet smell, also if you have any acetone, the nitro finish will melt, poly will do nothing at all. Another way to tell is with naphtha the nitro will polish quite nicely to a great shine.

Worst case, take your finger nail and dig into the finish, if it creases its nitro otherwise its poly

would a blow dryer work just as good as a heat gun

Honestly I don't know the answer to that question. My initial thought is no. The lowest setting on my heat gun is 600 degrees F, and I don't have any hair (so no need for a blow dryer) but I doubt it gets that hot even on max setting.
