As some of you may know I’ve been interested in how to market new music online and how it can be done effectively. I have some close friends (Steve and Joy) who have produced an album and we have been busy trying to get their songs online and most importantly found and sold.
Now, I’m not sure how all of this works. This really is an experiment in marketing and I’m sure I will make plenty of mistakes and hopefully come up with some clever ideas, but I wonder if you all might help me out and go to Amazon and listen to a few previews of their music. (I’m hoping that “hits” will generate interest)
You don’t have to buy any tracks but if you do I’ll personally take you out to the local strip joint and buy you a lap dance! haha
The name of the band is “In Too Deep” and the name of the album is “In Too Deep”.
Here is the link
http://www.amazon.com/In-Too-Deep/dp/B002CVP230/ref=sr_shvl_album_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1249222566&sr=301-3
Would you mind doing the Phipster a favor and checking out the album? Thanks guys!
Meanwhile I will be helping them to create a “web presence” and experimenting with different ways to get them noticed. Any suggestions from forum members about marketing new bands would be a great help.
Right now their music is listed and for sale on Rhapsody, ITunes, Amazon, AmieSt, Napster, and other music download sites.
I want to thank you all in advance for taking the time to help me out with this!

Myspace and facebook profiles should been done, but I think you already knew that. Many even companies today plan or use to use facebook for advertising.

@Emp,
Thanks, yeah I was planning on it. Joy has a "problem" with those type of sites so I'm gonna have to pull out all the "phip charm" and change her mind! (if you're reading this Joy, I'm splashing on some cologne right now and putting on a clean shirt too!!!)

I'm not sure whether amazon's search engine algorithm uses a number of hits as a popularity factor or not,but sure, I always like to help the unknown band out.:)

Suggestions:
-well, for starters...change an album cover. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad and it certainly does have kind of a psychedelical vibe. It's just simply too amateurishly done by today's standards.
-you can also log into your amazon account and write a review of the album. Amazon buyers like to see user reviews of the products, even if the don't actually read them.It's a purely psychological thing.
-create myspace and facebook accounts if they don't have them already. The best marketing for an unknown band is still word of mouth one and social networking sites can do wonders.Ask Arctic monkeys :P.
-try to create a band profile on last.fm. It's by far the most popular music search engine and web portal on the webs at the moment.At least for the age group 11-30 anyways.
-make some promo shots
-write a short bio or a short introduction of a band, even if it's completely fake, and put it online. Trust me, the last thing a potential customer/fan wants to see when he enters a band's promo site is an empty space and some mp3s. +show promotors and A&R people love band bios.Don't know why but they do.
-put out a CD/LP.Show promotors freakin' love bands with albums under their belts.
That's all I can think of at the moment.Hope it helps.:)

oh, and I'll I hold you to your word about that strip joint and a lapdance.

Cool points out there Calvin especially that amazon review thing :D also that Bio thing is very true, I personally do the same if I hear interesting band, I go to their website (like I recently did for band Crusified Barbara.)

Yeah Phip, try to convince her that even social networking sites are evil, they can be useful for own purposes XD.

@Calvin,
Thank you sir! Great suggestions. I wasn't aware of last.fm so I'll check that out and get started on some bios and promos. Get a passport and book your flight "Bubbles" is waiting to give you that lapdance! haha
Thanks again,
Phip
