Well I can't tell you why as I'm not the one who deleted it and I didn't see it. But maybe it was a thread that has already been made by another member before? If not a mod proably thought it had some inappropriate content of any kind in it. There will be a good reason I'm sure, this place is moderated very well.

Yeah I tested the mods one time with a ridiculous thread and sure enough it was deleted the same day.

It was a poll about food.

I think it wasn't too ridiculous after all because some really irrelevant threads actually have peoples interests and spark interesting discussions. Just look at the lighter thread.

Sometimes the forum slows down and we need something to talk about.

Oh it was the lighter thread?

It was a good thread but I guess a mod didn't deem it worthy.

how was that thread not important, we've had threads about being hippies, how is having one about lighters which has always been a side part of music. If you've ever watched a music documentary don't tell you haven't seen a musician take out a $100 zippo and light up.

I agree patleh, I mean it was an entertaining thread.

I'd wish it were the same for everyone. We've also had Video Game (save Guitar Hero) threads which are extremely irrelevant.

Don't get me wrong I feel the mods are doing a great job but it is unclear what is a proper or legit thread.

There's surely been less relevant threads.

Well i think even video game threads (if people find them interesting) should be a loud. But why do the mods need to delete threads according to irrelevance, if it is truely irrelivant then the people want go to it.

It is unclear though like it's either delete irrelevant threads or allow them

or have clear criteria so we can agree what are good discussions. Mods have previously explained to me why my threads have been deleted and there has always been a good reason.

Now I join you patleh and ask

Why was the lighter thread deleted?
The mod should have sent you a message....Maybe they did already.

I deleted the thread, because I felt that it really had nothing important to say on this site. Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with threads being started for subjects unrelated to what this site is primarily concerned about (education of music, theory and related areas) because it's important to keep this place friendly, maintain the community atmosphere and stop it spiralling downwards into an Ultimate Guitar-type scenario. However, I don't think that a thread about lighters can be deemed relevant simply by making the connection that a lot of musicians smoke!

Just my opinion of course, but I see this matter from two sides. On the one side, this is a GUITAR website, which some time ago, was strictly dedicated to the advancement of one's guitar knowledge and skill. I personally find it unfortunate that as of late, a large portion of the new threads have nothing at all to do with guitar or music at all and are completely off kilt to what I had percieved as the intention of the site.
However, I like the whole 'community' feel to the site and I believe that some of these 'pointless' or 'irrelevant' threads aid the cohesiveness of some of our members. Music is all about union and harmony and thus I do see that as a connection or relevance to these debatable threads.
As I stated above, I do find it unfortunate that there are not more threads of direct relevance to furthering ones knowledge of guitar. But, I also find these other threads to be totally acceptable, only if they are secluded from the more music/guitar oriented threads.

@patleh: I do not believe Afro meant to say that no one had anything important to say. I can not tell you what he meant simply because I am not Afro, however, I am sure, as a moderator he has only the sites best intentions in mind and meant no offense to you or any other members.

@league: I don't think it is needed for the moderators to create a 'clear criteria' for us to follow. In my opinion, if one would take a moment to think about whether your thread will benifit the site or its members before posting, then these issues would be less common, because I am sure that everyone on this site is certainly smart enough to separate benificiary ideas from ones that are not.

@Afro: I admire your firmness in keeping this site as unique as it is and I think you are doing an excellent job of it. However, I might suggest as a mere humble member, that perhaps alternative thread ideas be offered to replace a thread deemed irrelevant before said thread is deleted.

Rock on dudes.

i believe that the fact that as time goes by less threads are dedicated to guitar and music are because, mainly, a lot of us are common users, we use the forums regularly and we have more than two months on here (nothing personal to those that dont fit into this) so all or most of our questions are already answered in lessons or previous posts. And others maybe, at least me, think that theres nothing we(i) can teach to you. Besides, were regular users, most of us, and as far as you can know someone you met on the web, we know each other enough for there to exist that trust. (joking, phipping, personal opinions, etc.) Besides its nice to speak to people that you will most prbly never get to see.

Ill try to enshorten the upper paragraph.
Most of the questions we had before joining are answered shortly and the trusting envoirment of the forums invites you to post threads not having to do with guitar or music itself, but opinion.

So. Just relax guys, take it personal all of you

Im not against thread deleteing, but this should make part of the decision. Of course, all disrespectful threads should be deleted. And also old threads could.

I want to state clearly, that as moderstors dont actually get paid for being moderators they do this on their free time, theyre keeping this site clean and "moderated", so there should always be respect for them. I appreciate what youre doing, and i dont want you to take it personal, i just had to express my point of view.

if i remember that thread started out about lighters and turned into talking about strippers...not sure how that happened but it did.

I think it's cool to have a thread to vent on but i think we need to still keep it clean and somewhat music related.

Well I can see how the site has strayed off since I first visited it. Its gotten better in most areas lets not forget we've experienced worse threads from guitarboy66.

Put it this way if you saw a thread about Skolds girlfriend or Call of Duty(nothing against you guys) have so many people commenting on it, then what would be the harm in talking about lighters?

I think it should just be equal. Irrelevant/bogus threads deleted.

Great job from Afro you have my respect for as long as I've been on this forum, truly a veteran. You did your job as a mod but there's definitely worse threads that could have been deleted.

i actually like the "Community" feel of this place, yeah its a guitar forum, but sometimes its fun to talk about other stuff, and the people here are cool and you can actually discuss stuff without someone being a jerk about everything (note: im not calling mods who delete threads jerks) but isnt this the reason why we can choose to be able to view General Chat topics or not? so the people who want to talk about other things can and people who just want to talk guitar can do taht as well

HMMMM thats what's really difficult about the threads thats why I think theyre should be some guidelines like Jazz pointed out on her mod thread.

I think staying on topic is what makes this such a good forum. Save the picture or "sticky" threads.

People really need help sometimes and if random threads are being created constantly it will divert attention from good topics REMEMBER GUITARBOY66!

People will begin to join for reasons besides music and that is what makes a UG FORUM

Beware the UG FORUMS if that ever happens here consider me Notim.(No offence Notim)

http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/topic.php?id=1172

We've had this before read the first posts on this thread.

Yes I agree there were some truly pointless posts from Skold, but at that time our moderating 'powers' didn't allow us to delete posts/threads, only the Admin could do that. Believe me, had I been able to, much of Skold would have been deleted from the site. The same goes for guitarboy666 (or 66, whichever it was).

And guys, like league said, I am a veteran of this site. I think as far as the common users of this site goes I am possibly one of the longest users here now, and I have been able to watch what happens in the past many times when posts and threads get out of control and we have actually entered Ultimate Guitar territory! That's why I try to keep a really close eye on which threads stay running and which need to go. I'm aware that in doing so I will inevitably step on people's toes, but unfortunately it's a necessary process in order to keep this place tidy and accessible to everyone.

Patleh, sorry if it pissed you off, but like I say my main consideration throughout all of this is first and foremost to keep this place a music education website.

Regards,
Afro

I just want to say that is a valid point, I can see why you feel that way Patleh. But in their defence the mods do commonly allow off topic threads to be here on a moderate level. Sometimes it might just get a bit much at once and it seems like its stopping being a music forum.

Personally I think this post and others alike should be kept up so it doesn't seem to you or other users like the mods are blanking you out when something like this happens. Yes this is off topic to guitar but I think this sort of post is good to stay up so everyone can start to be reassured that this place is still being ran well. It's still relative to how the forum runs.

I hope you're not too annoyed Patleh. I have to say I do enjoy your input to the site.

I'm with Afro all the way on this one. Even though my comment is late; the forum topics are just getting crazy. To be honest, I think that's also why a lot of new members are joining, for the sake of messing around. Which is cool, but the point of THIS site is to learn. If you guys have so much free time on your hands GO PLAY GUITAR! LEARN! Do something educational other than writing loads of irrelevant topics and wasting valuable time.

@ Patleh; yeah, we all love having a laugh, and we can do that with some topics on here. But trying to entertain yourself by posting a topic about masturbating is pathetic. You may be annoyed at Afro, but basically, deal with it.

And the reason why this topic wasn't deleted is because you were asking why your previous topic was deleted and we're giving you the answers.

I don't even see what point you needed to make though, all we're doing is making the site better and by posting something like that it just pushes you down to the kids table. Next time just understand that Admin made us mods for a reason.

uh oh jazz getting a little smug, cuz i thought that moderators were made because of their knoledge of music not they're uncanny ability to decide what is right it a purely subjective matter.

and wtf?? my thread got deleted even though a MODERTAOR said he would let it slide, now the moderators are breaking promises and acting all high and mighty, jesus why did our admin choose you guys
