Its not really just "A" chord that makes a song sad, its the progression and the feel you portray. Fill a progression with lots of minor chords, and slow tempo and you'll have something sad.
Diminished i don't think is really sad sounding persay.

I feel that D Minor is the saddest of keys, it instantly makes people weep.

Haha! Good old Nigel Tufnel!

And patleh, see if you can work it out yourself - I promise it's not that hard and the feeling you get from working something out yourself rather than somebody else telling you is far better!

I was thinking about this, and let some of my music theory help my guitar playing

Try this chord:

325422, or any bar of it, so if you wanted it open, it would be

103200

It has no inversion, so you might be able to play with that a bit, but it's (the one on top with root = G) Gmaj7b5

Sounds really great :)

All chords can sound sad. Minor chords sound sad on their own. Major just need some help.

Yeah I think what you're looking for is a chord progression.

As for chords, minor seventh chords(m7) sound melancholy.

It's definately more about the progression than just one chord. The intro and verse of Nutshell by Alice in Chains uses Em7, D and Cadd9 chords. Only one minor chord in there, but the decent of the root notes from E to D to C coupled with the sparse instrumentation and slow tempo make it a really sad song.

It doesn't matter that there is only one minor chord in the progression, the minor chord is the HOME position. Of course with a minor tonic you will always have a sad sounding song. Any progression of 654, or 645 (using a major scale, meaning 6 = relative minor) will always sound sad. That's just how music theory works.
