yeah the E (correct me if it isn't E) mixolydian scale Rhoads used for the Crazy Train solo

e----------------------------------------------17-19^21----------
B-------------------------------------14-15-17-------------------
G----------------------------13-14-16----------------------------
D-------------------12-14-16-------------------------------------
A----------12-14-16----------------------------------------------
E-12-14-16-------------------------------------------------------

and the A melodic Minor scale (mostly for hard rock and metal)

e--------------------------------7-8-10---------------------------
B-------------------------6-9-10----------------------------------
G-------------------5-7-9-----------------------------------------
D-------------6-7-9-----------------------------------------------
A-------5-7-8-----------------------------------------------------
E-5-7-8-----------------------------------------------------------

But you can do any minor or major pantatonic scale and make is sound hard rock like slash and zakk wylde does.

yeah try em on heavy distortion and lots of overdrive. And if you want that slash epic guitar solo sound, put you tone down to 1.73 and put on about half reverb and a little echo and full overdrive, and 1/4 distortion and you will get that "november rain" guitar solo kind of sound. Sounds kinda like steve vai as well now that I think about it...

EMB is correct, its just how you make the scale feel. Ive made metal shred riffs with phrygian scales, and major scales, even pentatonic scales. Its all about the note placement, in comparison with the chord progression.

Mixolydian was mainly used in Jazz, never really classed it for Rock and Roll before. That's a first.

Both are right.
Jazz and Blues both have heavy use for myxolydian, though a lot of blues players only use pentatonic and blues scales.
