Hypothetical situation. You have a best friend. She cuts herself to relieve stress/pain. What do you do?

Tell her parents first off.

Spend time with her, talk to her, just hang out with her to make her feel accepted.

my friend claims to cut herself but shes just joking, idk make her feel welcome, and normal, acctually cutting yourself/being injured, realeases endorphines as ive explained earlier does a bunch of stuff. idk.

You should talk with her first. Let them now you give a s#$t and if they don't stop then go to parents or console or something.

This might sound silly but I worried many of my freinds would die when they did this (but only for 'fashion', so they wouldn't get accused of being labelled a 'chav' instead, they prefered emo) but they stopped after a few months max and stopped being so stupid. So any luck she'll come to her senses on her own and stop it. If she doesn't, you can always just call her a chav so she thinks she's failing and gives up!

find out why she cuts and try to help, try to get her to tell you everytime she cuts. maybe whenever she cuts, you cut, so if she doesnt want you to be hurt she wont do it anymore, idk

Woah, I actually really like BBT's idea, only maybe not your wrist as it's risky, you could cut an artery as I'm sure you're aware. But even your finer tips or something should be enough to scare her and stop.

(But even though I was serious when I said that, now I'm dying to say that if you do cut your wrist, I'll cut mine in fear because you're my freind and the vicious cycle goes on! :D But it is a good idea.)

NO. DO NOT CUT YOURSELF. FFS. You guys are far too young to realise how silly that is. Teenagers have no idea of hardships; some may have been raped or possibly abused. But that does not mean they should handle it by cutting themselves and thinking this new * fashion called "Emo" is "cool". They're at their stage of overwhelming emotion and are unable to handle it at times, but that does not mean cutting yourself is the answer.

Ozz, don't feel like you need to take everyone's problems onto your shoulders, otherwise they'll always depend on you and you'll have no one to depend on when you need help.

Keep telling her to go see her doctor, or if she's capable; go and speak to her parents, siblings. The closest of family can usually help more. If she wants to speak to someone different, tell her to go and see the doctor, and the doctor can help her from there.

this is a very sensitive subject to touch upon. but generally id tell her to just stay preoccupied with other things every time she wanted to cut. i know a couple of friends and actually my girlfriend at one point did this, and its definately not for "fashion" Jazz. its the fact that they cannot cope at home and have to relieve themselves somehow. i know for a fact my girlfriend and mate did it for that reason because their parents and family are just horrible people. i feel sorry for my girlfriend as she is an only child and her parents row all the time, beat her and have a go at her for no reason. i mean would you really want to live a life like that?

Yes, some can't cope, JCB. But i'm sure you've seen the Emos in town, who do it for the sake of fashion. Who think the slightest problem is a good enough reason to cut themselves. I've seen it far too many times myself. I've seen people with good enough reasons, and i've seen people who do it for the personal desire for more attention. I've analysed many situations. I'm very aware of my comments.

I've lived a life like that JCB. I'm speaking of strong experience. It still does not mean cutting yourself is the answer. Some minds are unable to carry on with life, and think that all they'll ever see is a life they've been through previously, but all they need is to see the bigger picture, change their frame of mind and then they'll be fine.

i never said that cutting urself was the answer to anything, its awful, and i hate it. just giving ideas

There is a golden rule to dealing with people who cut themselves.
Ignore their asses. Even if they succeed (which they wont because they are fialures) we are not losing a cure for cancer.

Lets ask a few general questions and see what conclusions we draw from them.

Do these people
A: Live in a country where everything is provided for them.
B: Live in poverty and war and have seen family members starve to death.

How come noone has ever cut themselves and noone found out?
A: Because secretive they may be, their loving suroundings who treat them so badly they cut themselves always notice.
B: They tell people or drop not so subtle hints because they are attention starved.

Are they sad because:
A: They have such misserable lives.
B: Listen to awefull emo music.

When answering these questions, the truth I'm sure will come to you.

Well, we're probebly confusing Ozz by now. The actuall advice we're giving doesn't seem to agree with each other.

She could try exercising anyway, it wears the stess out of you. I used to act really angry just last year actually, I must've been one of the most anti social people there was around, even though my family and stuff has always been together. I'm not saying I cut myself for whatever reason, I didn't but by even just by March I changed. It'll probebly just pass thorugh. Just let her know you're concerned by the least, it'll make you feel better and her even if she won't show it, then the rest is up to her. It might drag on for months even but she'll get there. Now I've remembered my past I'm sure of it,

I'm going to try and help and let it take its course. Its basically the "fad" or "Cool thing" to do right now anyways. As you know though, I listen/play metal so I never got sucked into that ****. I was kinda raised to be myself and not the cool simulated crap. Or maybe its just me.

ive actually never been into such situation.. do u know her parents? if u do then you prbly know if telling them would help. talk to a doctor urself about it, then do as the doc thinks its better to, if u tel her to go 2 a doc, she might think: u too, i thught u were thrustworthy; she might feel more alonei if the cuts are a secret.

Yeah I agree although telling her parents is the difficult part because it could get her to stop or she could run away. I've seen this happen to a girl I used to hang out with she used to starve herself. I liked her but she was also a druggie that had been where I wouldnt dare.
