My greatest hero's are Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln (my living hero is my mom). And right now I would think that Abe is cying tears of joy! So i am glad that America is living up to it's promise. Now on the other hand the guy is a freaking politician so right there is proof that he sucks eggs. But that has nothing to do with race and and everything to do with the fact that politicians SUCK! i apologize to eggs everywhere!

Abe Lincoln did a great thing for the US, BUT a often overlooked fact was that he WAS a racist, despite popular belief. Although he freed the slaves, he viewed it as more of an economic issue then an equality issue. He was a great leader in that he respected the wishes of his people and did the best to carry them out. However, his personal beliefs on race would shock many people. I was kind of surprised when I first found out about it. So I respect him as a leader, but as a person, it's hard to say.

@ brodyxhollow,
Yes i understand what you are refering to, but my understanding is that as the war progressed his attitude and opinions changed. In the end he was a changed man. In any event he was imo a GREAT man who cared so very deeply about preserving and changing this nation for the better for all americans (whether we were ready for it or not). And as for Tom Jefferson he also spoke out of both sides of his mouth. Still, there are few who deserve to sit their table. Perfection, it's hard to achieve ain't it?

For me as foreigner, U.S election is a new start and Im curious to see if and how Oh'Bummer can warm relations to Russia after G.W.B soloing... I dont know as well as you Americans there of these two guys, but I think better one won. I wish not to see another war addict at the top of one of the most powerful nations in the world.

Obama can get screwed as far as guns go.

If he got rid of guns, he would be going against the 2nd amendment.

Well said Skold!
Fix peoples minds and there won't be any gun problem. I'm not willing to give up one single right guaranteed to me under the constitution. we have given up too much already! freaking seat belt laws and drunk road blocks, it all makes me sick! Now in my state it is the law that you must purchase health insurance or be penalized at tax time. they keep your refund and bill you for the rest! what's next "Insurance prison"? rat b_stards!

I don't understand why people think he wants to ban firearms... And he wouldn't necessarily "be going against the 2nd amendment." Whether or not the liberties stated within that amendment are from a distant time and no longer relevant, or if "anyone can have a gun" isn't what the amendment intends, is more a case for the Supreme Court to decide.

@ Crunch,
which brings us back to a recent argument here about freedom of speech and what was the intent of the founding fathers? actually they wanted to insure that the people could put up a fight against a tyranical government (outdated thought perhaps with today's weapons) however the amendment stands and serves as a reminder that this is supposed to be a nation of FREE individuals. Every democrat i can think of is always spouting off about banning guns, and i say it won't solve a freaking thing! Fix the social problems that exist in the country and there won't be any "gun problem". how about some stinking jobs and a rebirth of this nations incredible ability to create and manufacture? This is an incredible nation (much as some folks may put us down) we are a generous and good people. We are always first to help in case of disease and hunger worldwide, and yet we take it on the chin (sometimes rightfully) all too much these days! For all our faults we are a haven in a world of oppression.

Why was there a Civil War? Because of a bunch of racist **s who can't swallow their false pride and admit that whatever created us, be it God, or that Big Bang or anything else created us equally.

In all honesty, sport, tradition, heritage. You know there are so many things in todays life that are deadly, like cars. How many morons do we have driving around killing people with their cars? Too many. and it's legal too! Make a crappy judgement, kill someone for no reason other than stupidity and just pay a little money and bingo the problem goes away. That's civilized behavior for you! I understand that we all feel threatened because our neighbors own guns, but c'mon don't you think the criminals are going to keep theirs, or get them if they want to? and (please don't take offense) but i've seen you guys at soccer matches! the brutality and mahem and carnage is embarrasing! what's up with that? lol It's a sick world, and we aren't ever going to legislate it into perfection no matter how hard we try. I want my freedoms, you may NOT take them from me.

Who ever said we are civilized? Guns are an integrated part of our culture. Guns are as American as apple pie. I think that tradition goes back to the the revolutionary war, and the constitution. It keeps people form taking advantage of the un-armed and civilians can act as soldiers.

That is very true about cars. I think it's weird in America that you may, in some states, have a 14 year old behind the wheel of a car (3 years ahead of the UK), but you can't drink alcohol until you are 21, which is 3 years behind us.

As for the soccer hooliganism - that is caused by just a minority which unfortunately misrepresents the vast majority of football fans. You think we're bad though?! You should check out some of the Italian and Spanish fans!

What telecrater said is the meaning behind what I said. We had a war with our selves! Civilized....not much. And don't say we've changed either, we just have the KKK and gang violence now.

Civil War was more about rights of states vs. federal government. The south thought that the US government was interfering too much with their lives, and they wanted out. Slavery and racism were contributing factors but they were not the entire reason.

I once saw a picture from two Greek club teams playing. Part of the stadium was on fire from rioting fans and they were still playing! =

So did we a few centuries years ago, and another one in the 15th century as well! Loads of places have had civil wars, and so are a lot of places now. I can understand a developing country requiring firearms, but the US has the 12th highest Human Development Index in the world.

And would you still have as much gang violence if guns were made illegal?

Yes, they'd just resort to knives and other dangerous things besides guns. Banning guns won't solve anything getting the gangs to stop, or at least be at peace will.

Now can we please leave politics alone and get back to the music?

Yes blackholesun, the guns used for gang violence are almost never legally owned. Many of the weapons used (assault rifles) are actually illegal to own altogether. We're always going to have problems, ya know?

Here's another thing: What the hell do you need an assault rifle in your house for? Rifles are cool, shotguns are fine, but what do you need with a SCAR-L or an AK-47? Those weapons are not designed to protect, they are designed to kill.

On the other hand, it would be a load of fun to unload a few mags from an StG44 into an old car or something.

I think that sometimes its good to let old traditions/sport/heritage go. I think one of the only decent things that Labour have done for the UK is banning fox hunting. But don't worry you will never get rid of guns over there, I just don't think they do you any good.

Jazz, no offence but re-read what you wrote cause it does come across very racist.

Thank God you got rid of Bush!!

well i don't see the hype about guns you have the death penalty which is more than we have we have 20yrs for murder (as long as your not deemed insane) and they get let out early anyways for good behaviour. In america you can get the killers off the streets for good with out having to resort to killing, let the law deal with it.
and shooting a gas tank of a car doesnt blow it up unless you have those bullets (tracers i think they're called) that ignite as they fly through the air

on another politic issue is it true that george w bush is the most hated president of the USA yet cause i heard he was on the news but i always thought nixon was pretty hated after the watergate scandal

The only thing Skold, is that Native Indians don't care to run us. They're a peaceful race and don't care to indulge in other cultures other than their own.

Jews run Israel already.

Doz, late reply, only just got on again, Yeah, I realise that he's from America. I also want to remind everyone what I said before, Obama has good ideals. He probably is better than half the government dorks we've had, BUT power leads to corruption. He has so much power, he has the chance to change things around and change them for his own desires. Anyone would if they had the chance.

Tony Blair before he was elected was talking about students being put into fair education, and treated with the best education. The next thing you know he puts his own kids in a private school and doesn't bother doing anything with the crappy schools. He's a dork.

Though, they have a lot of work to do, and I wouldn't be up for running this country. Although, I have my own dreams if I did. >:D

Jazz: you're sort of judging him on things that haven't happened yet, and considering this is coming from a conversation about race it seems out of place - unless you are implying that because of his colour he is more likely to be corrupted - which I am sure you aren't!

Just seems like a random statement to be made, really, that's all. A lot of government parties do talk *** though, I agree.

This is true. Plus, AKs are not very useful for target shooting or hunting, since they're so inaccurate. However, my brother has a Czech army surplus SKS, but he hunts with it.
