A 6th chord is a major chord with the 6th note of the scale play in it. I can't tell you where the **** they are played because it differs in different ****y music.

Use them when ever you want. If it sounds right, go ahead. If you are playing a 6th chord, or any non-major or -minor chord, try to play that note in the melody. So, like, if you are playing a C6, include an A (the 6th note of the scale) somewhere in the melody while that chord is ringing.
