How do you pick?

I have been working on economy picking (directional Picking) and sweep picking but wanted to know how every one else approaches picking.

err i think every1 does all of tht not sure i understand, i alternate pick, idk wut economy pick is, i sweep in arrpregios, i fingerr pick, i upstroke and downstroke...

I try to alternate pick as much as I can, but I've gotten into the bad habit of downpicking everything which is really slowing me down. I try to finger pick somethings, but I don't really care to do it much. I don't know how to sweep.

Economy is where you pick downwards (or upwards) twice when playing adjacent strings, kinda like two string sweeping.

well, I am self-taught for guitar and I dont use a pick, never been confortable with it.

Yah, I was always too lazy to pick up a pick, so I taught myself to fingerpick

And now adays my fingerpicking has gotten pretty darn good =)

But my accual picking is lacking majorly

It depends on the song that I'm playing, mostly I use my fingers though.

There's a few songs I finger pick (REM-Everybody Hurts, Stairway, etc) but most times I use a pick. Problem is I taught myself so I just would use whatever sounds best. Like if I want a reggae sound, I upstroke.
I think I know what sweeping is, but I'm not sure (Is that where you hit three adjacent strings in one direction then come back up in the other direction?).
