That's because you aren't looking. Look up Jean Baudin. Plays 10 - 12 string basses.

I like them too! But usually on acoustic. It's like have a chorus effect when you strum. It's also possible to just pick it like a normal guitar (harder but not impossible).

How can having more tonal options be retarded?

It looks like a Mandolin to me (8 strings in 4 pairs). But there are 12 tuners on the headstock...

@GRX:
No way this could be a Mandolin. Mandolins are much smaller, I know for sure cause I was trying to tune an "ancient" one yesterday but the tuning machine was too rusty so I gave up...

I thought Mandols were 6 strings in 3 pairs? : /

And yeah they are WAY smaller.
That doesn't look that small to me.

Wow, Crunch that guitar thing. Does it have 3 strings per string.

It's reminds me of Captain America.

Jeff Amet from pearl jam plays an 8 string bass. It's like a 12 string guitar but lower and less strings.

According to Musician's Friend it's a 12 string bass.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Waterstone-Tom-Petersson-TP1234-Bass-Guitar?sku=512339

I have to imagine it would be really hard to play. Maybe not though, it appears to be a 4 strings, each with 2 sympathetic strings. That kind of makes sense with only having the four (larger) bass strings rather than the six on a guitar.

My guitar teacher has an interesting guitar. It has 6 guitar strings, but 2 or 3 bass strings as well. The frets are angled to account for the bass strings.

You can find a video of him playing it at his website. Here's the page if anyone is interested.

I decide to bump this thread up, since I've done some gear researching :) and I've "broadened" my tastes a little.

Guitars:

Gibson ES-359

Fender American Standard Strat:

And a custom (possibly made by me :D) guitar that is this shape:

It'll be white with gold hardware and maple neck and fingerboard. Probably a Seymour Duncan JB + 59 combo for more aggressive sounds.

Amps:

Orange AD30TC

I've gained some interest in Orange amps after I found that a store near me carries them. They're supposed to be superb!

Effects:

Some type of Wah-wah, phaser and delay pedals. I've already gots a Tubescreamer OD that I'm happy with. :)

EDIT:

And I'll throw in a Vintage guitar for good measure! Ladies and gents, the 1965 Harmony Rocket!.
