As y'all know I listen to a shit load of metal, including some of the newer stuff. I also love punk rock too. I already have all the bands that Doz listed for me back in February or something, but I want more bands.

Anyone know where I can find a big list of punk? Can you list some for me too?

I am trying to broaden my music taste (yet again) so I have more variety, not just metal.

Thanks!

What's kinda funny is I actually like just about every one of the bands Veqq has listed. I heard most and liked em ;p

Damn there are so many punk bands!

I bet Nutter will probably have something to say about this cause he does love punk rock.

Iggy and the Stooges are good. I also like the Offspring (BUt they may be more classified as "pop punk").

Here's what Michael sent me along with a history of punk (PM me if you want that).

Original Punk:
Ramones
Clash
Pistols

Hardcore:
Anti Flag
Minor Threat
Bad Brains

Street:
Street Dogs
Casualties

Revival:
Lower Class Brats

Don't know if you know of any of these already (some are pretty widely known).

Oh yeah, I also like think Black Flag is pretty good as well. Especially since the lead singer is nuts.

Also, Reel Big Fish is a ska/punk band. I've also started listening to NOFX.

punk is a fashion statement.

lol.

kidding. i dont really classify music anymore, i like what i like. but there tends to be a trend with punk music. its got an energy like no other. i like fugazi, descendants, operation ivy, bad brains, stuff like that.

and theres a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig difference between pop punk, and punk (in its many forms), but there is a connection. no two people are going to have the same definition of punk

thats true, I know people who would say Blunk 182 are punk and people who would say the sex pistols are punk, and the bands are almost opposite. Punk has too broad a meaning nowadays

I'm going to disagree with you there. There's a fine line in my opinion between regular punk and pop punk. Take The Ramones for example. They were the first punk band but also had a lot of pop influences in their music.

Okay this is my take on the pop punk/punk thing, argue if you want I'm just starting my opinion.

Well its changed alot, now a days, your not taken as a 'serious' punk band if you sing about anything other then politics and "down with the man", also if you have a noticeable melody or singing not the typical 'chug chug chug scream' your seen as 'Pop' punk....
For me I'd have to go with something I read on the Urban Dictonary.
Urban Dictonary: Punk
Quote taken from description no.3:
"B) Culture started in the 70's by the same music movement. The point of the culture was like the music, be yourself and disregard the angry emotions it may stir up. No longer a real culture, only a burned image with the values behind it lost, you can see it in stores such as Hot Topic. People No longer understand it was always about being yourself and not being anyone's shadow.

C) Modern Movement, characterized by some bands that have actually kept the movement alive, some by giving off the image, and pop-punk bands that are, regardless of what people want to say, in way of the Ramones and even the Misfits. Pop Punk is a very melodic form of punk, it's not "pop" because it's popular, it's pop because of the style of playing.
Bands that try to sell an image alone with no true love for the music are the ones made fun of the most, with little or no time together before being popularized by mainstream tv. These are the same bands that promote a pre-made image that's ready to sell to a pre-teen to early adult demographic. For the most part it works, and this entire culture has been reffered to as "Mallcore" or "mallxcore," because these are the same people that have never heard of the Ramones or Sex Pistols but think they're punk because they shop at hot topic and listen to MTV's Flavor of the week " band." feel free to laugh at these people, most people who know what the music is about do.

The Current culture is in a sad state because it's focused on replicating the 70's instead of being itself. There are a few who understand it and refuse to subscribe to the image mold.

D) Music Structure. Many like to characterize this genre with Power chords only and simple drum beats. These People are complete and utter idiots and should be regarded as imbecils. They more than likely know nothing about music in the first place, or are just that type of idiot that doesn't understand other types of music can be good, and that music, like other things, is all about opinion. Punk has had it's fair share of complicated guitar solos, insane drumming performances, all while keeping a melody, which most " jam bands" sorely lack, along with talent and lyrical prowess. Many of the early punk bands did utilize simple chords and beats, but like all types of music, it branched out and has many styles, from simple to complex, traditional to exotic, it all has to do with where you're looking."

Okay so to break it down for my point of view. Punk is to be yourself and not following the mold, listen to the music not to look 'cool' and be able to go 'I R PUNK!!' but because they genuienly like the music and understand it, maybe even follow the same political views of bands like Anti-Flag. If you dress in the punk 'mold' you do it because you like it not because you want to be 'punk', he'll I love punk music, only thing I'm a do is get a mohawk because I like them, I'm still going to keep my own military/band merch style dressing.

I don't really care that he had a wall of text. I like those... :P

I would say though, the complicated guitar solos and solos in general shouldn't be in punk, they are too bloated... :P
