Well the first thing you should really do is get some basic theory under your belt. Chords (+ extensions if possible), what chords are in keys, scales and the theory behind them, how to apply them to chords. Learning about some standard song forms would be recommendable as well. I'm pretty certain the answers to all of these can be found on this website, and if not feel free to post away my friend! Someone will be able to answer!

decide what the mood is will it be hard rock or blues or even slow down with a nice feel. Then try some chords around your tune sing to yourself or even hum it (since I can't sing I whistle the tune. Add some what I call pauses so the tune does not become a jumble mash of crap.

if you want a solo if your song is happy like the sun shine and makes a person feel good then I suggest a major sound as it very bright. If the song is base on hard words and generally getting up and shouting then try a minor sounding solo. This is very basic but I am sure that you will pick something out that you like.

As Afro says get some theory will be beneficial as well don't need to go mad I never do and ask if you need any more advice good luck

theory is pretty damn useful in my opinion.

and sometimes it helps to have a chord progression and then try and fit a sort of tune you can hum over that.

then replace the hummed notes with words and you should eventually get there.

i know you said you already had lyrics but sometimes its easier to start afresh than to try and fit lyrics and song together.

but thats just my opinion, im sure loads of other people disagree with that lol.

good luck anyhow.

Theory and practice. Learn anything you need to get the song written - and then just try and try again, hopefully getting better gradually.
